Bruce Montagne has been traveling for more than ten years making
images in some of the most beautiful locales in Canada and the
North Country. His journeys have taken him from the coast of
Nova Scotia to photograph baby seals on the sea ice to the
jagged peaks of the Canadian Rockies. He has also traveled from
the emerald waters and limestone cliffs of Bruce Peninsula's
Georgian Bay to the Northwest Territories' inaccessible
Barrenlands where he canoed 150 miles on one of North America's
wildest rivers.
An area much closer to his home, however, has captured his
heart. He has taken thousands of images of Lake Superior's
rugged and remote coastline and its resident wildlife. From snow
shoeing in wind-chill of -85F to paddling its shoreline at +95F,
Lake Superior's Shorelines holds an endless source of
inspiration for him in all four seasons. Though he photographs
in many parks and refuges, Montagne seeks the wild places beyond
the beaten path for inspiration.
Bruce is a storyteller. He notes, "In nature, there are
countless stories being told. Stones, a baby fox, the boreal
forest or a singing warbler may tell them. I slow my pace to
uncover these stories and then record them on film."
Montagne's images have been published in many books, calendars,
and magazines as well as on greeting cards, postcards and
posters. His clients include National Wildlife, Birder's World,
Smithsonian, Voyageur Press, Northword Press, Sierra Club, World
Wildlife Fund, The Nature Conservancy, Audubon and many others.
In 1996, he was a finalist in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of
the Year Competition.
